A practice and
a business are
not the same thing.

A solo attorney can realistically carry twenty-five to forty cases at once, and only while also ordering records, tracking balances, negotiating reductions, handling property damage, and taking every client call. That is not a discipline problem. It is a limit on what one person can hold.

Full-time staff starts to make economic sense somewhere around two hundred fifty to five hundred cases. Below that, payroll does not carry itself. So the firm sits in a valley between the number one person can manage and the number that supports a real operation, with nothing obvious to bridge it.

The consequence shows up the first time the attorney takes a week off. Nobody is answering client questions. Nobody is moving files. Nobody is handling the property damage claim that came in Tuesday. The work does not pause, it accumulates, and the attorney returns to a deficit.

A firm in that position is not a business. It is a job that happens to have a name on the door. It cannot be sold, stepped away from, or handed to anyone.

Crossing the valley requires operational capacity before the firm can afford to hire it permanently.
