Use your real case list
Typed-in averages get you close. Your own case list gets you closer: the simulator can count your cases by phase, how many you sign and settle, your real average settlement and how long your cases take.
| Column | What it gives the simulator | Needed |
|---|---|---|
| Phase or status | Your open cases by phase, and which cases are closed | Required |
| Date signed | How many cases you sign a month | Required |
| Date settled | How many cases you settle a month, and how long cases take | Recommended |
| Gross settlement | Your real average settlement | Recommended |
| Attorney fee | Your real fee rate after reductions | Optional |
| Outcome or closing reason | How many cases end with a fee | Optional |
| Case manager | Each person's caseload | Optional |
| Last client contact | How many clients have waited more than 14 days for an update | Optional |
Which cases to include
Every open personal injury case, plus every case closed in the last 24 months, settled or not. One row per case. Closed cases are how the simulator learns your real averages.
Leave out client names, phone numbers and other personal details. The simulator does not need them, and it skips any name column it finds.
Where to run it
Filevine: build a report on your personal injury projects with the fields above and export it to Excel. Field names differ from firm to firm, so pick the closest match: your sign-up or project created date for Date signed, your settlement fields for the rest.
Other systems: most case management systems can export a case list or report with these columns to Excel or CSV.

- !Values onlyThe page reads plain cell values. Formulas are never run and macros are never opened. Files over 10 MB are turned away.
- !No names neededColumns with names, phone numbers, emails or addresses are skipped without being read.

How the grade works
Money and cases come first
The grade measures where your firm stands today. With our starting weights, your goal, your pipeline, your cash and your signing pace make up 85% of it. Your team and your systems help a firm get there, so they count too, but they cannot lift a firm that does not have the cases or the cash.
The same simulator fits a solo attorney holding steady and a firm that wants to double. Set the goal to what you make now or to where you want to be, change the typical caseloads and the cash cushion to match how you run, and weigh the grade your way with the sliders.
Cash sets a ceiling. If cash runs out at today’s pace, the overall grade stops at D+. An F for cash holds it at C+, and a D holds it at B.
- Fees around your goal date, against the goal
- Signing against settling, backlogs, and how many cases are close to paying
- Months of costs in the bank, and where cash goes over the next year
- What you sign against what the goal needs, and whether your cash can carry the marketing
- How full your people are
- How many of the ten systems you have in place
Your overall grade with these weights
Move one weight and the others adjust in proportion, so the six always add up to 100%. The report above regrades as you go. 90 and up is an A, the 80s a B, the 70s a C, the 60s a D and under 60 an F, with a plus or minus at the top and bottom of each band.

Questions
About the simulator
What is the firm health simulator?
A free tool for personal injury firm owners. You put in your fee goal, the cases on your books, how many cases you sign and settle, your cash and monthly costs, your team and the systems you have in place. It grades where the firm stands today: six grades and one overall grade, each with the numbers behind it.
How is the overall grade worked out?
It is a weighted average of six grades: your goal counts 30%, your pipeline 20%, cash 20%, intake 15%, your team 10% and systems 5%. Cash also sets a ceiling: if cash runs out at today’s pace the overall grade stops at D+, an F for cash holds it at C+, and a D holds it at B. These are our starting weights. Under How the grade works you can set your own, and the report regrades as you move them. The ? on each section of the report shows the calculation with your own numbers.
Why do cases and cash count more than systems?
Systems and steady client contact help a firm reach its goals, but they cannot stand in for the cases or the cash it takes to get there. A firm with every system in place and too few cases is still short of its goal, so in our starting weights money and cases make up 85% of the grade.
What numbers do I need?
Your fee goal and when you want to reach it; your open cases by phase; the cases you sign and settle a month over the last 12 months; your marketing spend and what a signed case costs you; your average settlement, fee and months from signing to fee; your cash on hand and monthly costs; and your team. Rough numbers are fine to start. The closer they are, the more the grade tells you.
Can I use my case list from Filevine or another system?
Yes. Export your case list to Excel or CSV with the phase, date signed, date settled, gross settlement, attorney fee, outcome, case manager and last client contact, then drop it in under Use your real case list. The simulator matches your columns, lets you check them, and fills in the steps from your real cases. Columns with names or contact details are skipped.
Is my file or anything I type uploaded or stored?
No. The simulator runs in your browser. Your file is read on your computer and never sent to a server, nothing you put into the simulator is stored, and the PDF report is made in your browser too. The only thing that leaves your browser is a suggestion you choose to send us with the form, and your numbers go with it only if you check the box.
What is in the PDF report?
Everything in the report, on letter-size pages: your overall grade and the six grades with their reasons, where the firm stands today, your goal in cases, the fees and cash charts, your pipeline, team and systems, your next steps, and every number you put in.
Can I keep the simulator on my phone?
Yes. On a phone or tablet, tap Add to home screen at the top of this page and follow the steps for your browser. The simulator then opens in one tap, like an app. Nothing you put in is stored, so each visit starts with the example firm.
How is this different from the marketing simulator?
This simulator grades where the firm stands today across money, cases, team and systems. The marketing simulator plans your marketing: what you can afford to spend and what a growth goal takes. Start here, then take your room to invest to the marketing simulator.
Does it work for a solo attorney who is not trying to grow?
Yes. Use what you make now as your goal, set case managers to zero, and the report grades whether the firm is holding steady: your cash, your book, and whether you sign enough cases to replace the ones you settle. The caseload figures can be changed to match how you work.
How can I suggest a change?
With the form under Tell us what would make it more accurate, on this page. We want the simulator to be as customizable and as accurate as possible, so if a number does not fit how your firm runs, or you would like it to show something else, tell us. Check the box to include your numbers and grades, and we can check the grade with you.
Is this legal, financial or business advice?
No. It is a planning tool built on your numbers and typical planning assumptions, not a forecast. Injury Enterprise is not a law firm. For decisions about your firm, talk with your own advisors.
A planning tool, not a forecast or financial, legal or business advice. It uses your numbers and typical planning assumptions: cases settle around your average months from signing to fee (most between 0.6 and 1.6 times it), cases further along pay sooner, and the cost to sign a case rises 16% each time marketing spend doubles past $5,000 a month. Caseloads, the cash cushion and what litigated cases settle for start at typical figures you can change in the steps above. Injury Enterprise is not a law firm.
